SHIP WRECK HIKING & CANOE TRAILS

This might be hard work, but its a heavenly experience at the same time. So remember that we are focusing on 'Adventure Activities' in this months FITNESS TRAINING & ACTIVITIES, where we obviously will include activities that are strenuous and are considered a good physical workout, but also where we are primarily focused on doing activities that feel more like its about the experience, and the excitement and fun, and less about the exercise....well we found another adventure that'll  leave you wanting more, and fully exhausted from the workout aspect.

Meet...

This week we see ourselves in the beautiful Eastern Cape, more specifically Port Alfred, well close-ish to there. We thought it best you take the KLEINEMONDE WEST RIVER CANOE TRAIL, it seems like the best balance of hiking and canoeing, as well as the best balance of an overall workout, and therefor the best start to this kind of adventure.

The Kleinemonde West River Canoe Trail is a self-guided adventure and the price includes the hire of the canoes, life jackets and hikers accommodation. There is a sleep over in the Nyala Game Reserve and a paddle back the next day.

So its a FULL-ON 2-3day outing, totally a brilliant weekend away. You will experience the beauty of the river, which is not tidal, while you paddle in comfortable canoes to the Lily Pad overnight hut, and its an easy 8km paddle.  You will be able to spot spoonfills, ducks, herons, cormorants on the river bank at first, but then as the river narrows, you will see different kingfishers, (The Giant, Pied, Half-Collared, Malachite & perhaps Pygmy). Listen for the call of the Fish Eagles, see Knysna Louries flying above you, notice the groups of red-knobbed coots or badchicks diving ahead as you pass up stream.

Just beyond the 8km mark, the canoes are pulled into the river bank, and you will hike 3km's to the Lily Pad, which is rustic but comfortable, outdoor showers, covered lapas, bunk beds, braai area etc... The timber deck overlooks the river for relaxing and listening to the birds. There is PLENTY of game too see as you walk around the Nyala Valley Game Reserve.

Then there is another 6km hike and a 16 km canoe return...its just simply a heavenly way to exercise, canoe, hike, eat, sleep, hike, canoe...hey, it works!!!

The trail is situated 15km from Port Alfred on the East London side of the R72.
