ORLANDO TOWERS

WE MAY HAVE TAKEN IT TOO FAR WITH THIS ONE....but its 100% the one thing that has to be in your TOP 10 on your BUCKET LIST.

In FITNESS TRAINING & ACTIVITIES this month we decided not to go with the norm, as we wanted to focus on EXERCISE disguised as REALLY FUN DAYS OUT!!! You know, where you are having so much fun and are so distracted that you don't realise how much energy you've burnt, or how many calories you've lost, and where you wake up the next day and think , 'OMG, what did I do that I am so stiff???!!!"

That, that's what we are going for, exercise disguised as fun, shouldn't it always be...?!

Please meet your ultimate challenge...

This is one serious full-on day outing that will leave you breathless, tired, exhilarated, and fully charged to take on life and anything it throws at you, bugger lemons, bring me something more hard-core...LIKE THROW BUSES AT ME!!!

We did this, and we LOVE IT.

The ORLANDO TOWERS VERTICAL ADVENTURE CENTRE was the brain child of Rob Woods, back in 2001.Now owned and managed by NICO MYBURG who has 20 years on extreme sports experience, motivated by introducing people to the world of adrenaline.

They have taken the cooling towers in SOWETO and made them into the best playground you'll ever find, its amazing what they have brought to this game, and its includes, Bungee Jumping (100m) between the towers, the worlds highest SCAD Freefall, in the towers from 70m up, the SWING in between the towers, the ABSEILING or RAP-JUMPING down the outside of the towers, to the WALL-CLIMBING up the towers, and they even added PAINT-BALLING....its a full-day, BUT WORTH EVERY BIT OF FEAR YOU HAVE WHEN YOU ARRIVE....it becomes full-on ADRENALINE PUMPING POINT-PROVING, LIFE CHANGING, MIND-ALTERING FUN....oh, and there's BASE JUMPING, just because, why not?!

At the end of a hellish day, there is an awesome restaurant aclled CHAF POZI, its a Shisa Nyama Restaurant & Shebeen with the best AFRICAN BRAAI styled food, entertainment and some of the best DJ's you've heard in a long time. (Maybe we enjoyed that part because we could drink afterwards.) But that was the cherry on the cake, didn't expect to want to stay into the late evening.

Seriously, do yourself a favour, go check out orlandotowers.co.za, you may be scared, but you will never ever regret it...DO IT!!!

BLACKWATER TUBING STORMSRIVER

TOTALLY CLAPPING HANDS LIKE A RETARDED SEAL ON CRACK RIGHT NOW, we LOVE this adventure, it really is exercise, but they lie to you and sell it sugar coated in fun and excitement.

This month in FITNESS TRAINING & ACTIVITIES, we are giving you alternatives to 'normal' exercise and sourcing OUTDOOR ADVENTURES that are so exhilarating that you wont know, til its over, that you've just had the workout of your life.

Meet....
Tsitsikamma Black Water Tubing, A.K.A "Storms River Tubing", takes you on an unforgettable and totally unique adventure that includes TUBING, SWIMMING & BOULDERING, through the world renowned Tsitsikamma National Park on the Garden Route.

Black Water Tubing trips are run all year round and the experience varies from a white water action-packed roller coaster ride, to a chilled day out in Mother Nature with optional Tubing Jumps. The adventure starts and ends at TUBE 'n AXE Accommodation in the Storms River Village on the Garden Route.

They offer half-day & full day trips. The Half-Day Trip is conducted on the upper section of the river where the river is at its widest, and safest, and is therefor suitable for folks with an average fitness level. Here the indigenous Forrest's cascade down to the river edge and sightings of birds such as the half collard, pied and giant kingfishers, fish eagles, and Knysna Louries are common place.

The Full-Day Trip is taken on the lower section of the river with the exit in the Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikammma Coastal National Park, and this is NOT for the unfit or fainthearted, as the adventure will take up to 5 hours.

This Tubing experience is a total scenic adventure, that is an fun as it is beautiful, and there are hours of swimming, rock-hopping, tube-jumps, bouncing down small bubbling rapids, and also includes kloofing & bouldering...this is a jam packed adventure!

Please go check out their website and BOOK NOW!!!!

They also have accomodation and awesome braai's.

Check this out...

MIDMAR MILE

In MARATHONS & SPORTING EVENTS this month, we are having a look at OPEN WATER SWIMMING COMPETITIONS. Again, we think that swimming is one the best, if not the frontrunner, when it comes to best exercise.  Not only because it trains both upper and lower body, giving you a full workout, and not only because its one the best ways to learn how to regulate your breathing, but mostly because you can use at as a form of meditation. You are fully immersed in your own world, there is mostly silence, \even when in a competition, its you against you.

Meet...

If you haven't heard about the Midmar Mile, we are glad you are reading this post, as its only been around for more than 40 years. It is the WORLDS LARGEST OPEN WATER SWIM, and it happens in FEBRUARY of each year at the MIDMAR DAM, North of Pietermaritzburg in the fabulous Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Each year it draws thousands of competitors, from serious international athletes and the big boys of holding Olympic medals and titles, to purely recreational swimmers and those who have a point to prove to themselves. There are a few inspirational stories that'll have you at the very least respecting this race, but hopefully doing it at least once in your life. (Read this story on the following link, it'll leave you feeling like you complain about crap... http://www.midmarmile.co.za/us-motivational-speaker-heads-to-south-africa-for-aquelle-midmar-mile/)

The race is attracting over 15 000 people each year and growing, and is already recognised as the Worlds Largest Open Water Swim as per the Guinness Book of World Records, and that was in 2009 already.

The distance covered is roughly 1 mile, and there are qualifiers so that, because of sheer participant volume, fastest swimmers are let off first, and then they work their way backwards.

Its an awesome race in an awesome place, just do it, even if its just once, its an experience you'll never forget and medal you'll have forever.

DOLPHIN MILE SURF SWIM SERIES

Lets get wet...shall we?!

This month in MARATHONS & SPORTING EVENTS, we thought we'd take to water, and focus our attention on Water Based Marathons & Open-Water Swimming. (AND ITS AWESOME EXERCISE)

Meet....

Firstly, without a doubt, swimming is the best form of exercise, it is such an all-rounder and benefits you the most in comparison to any other form of exercise. What marathon enthusiasts forget is that it is an awesome sport too. Its excellent heart rate training, breathing conditioning, it is the best all over workout, its also the best body shaping exercise you can get. Cycling and Running just trains your legs, Swimming trains everything.

To prove a point, (and NOT KNOCK a sport), if body comparisons are a reason to choose to do any of the three sports, let look at the average body shape of each...(LONG DISTANCE)

Cyclists (Heavy Legs/ Skinny Arms)
Runners (Skinny Legs/ Skinny Arms)
Swimmers...(need we say anything?!)
Good sales tactic ne'?!

Now please remember, before you attack our perspective, its just our perspective and a sales technique to get people into swimming, as its not only good for an all-over workout, its also damn good for your joints, and rehabilitation.

So we continue to the Dolphin Mile...how awesome is this...Starting off in font of either uShaka Pier or the Marine Surf Life Saving Clubhouse, both of which are close to the Durban Harbour, you can choose between a 1 Mile/ 1600m swim, or the 2 lap version of the course. (You have to complete the first lap in 40min in order to participate in the long version, double lap course.) So ultimately, this race steers you in the direction of a 80 - 100 Mins Time Completion.

The dates are either the 7th of December 2014, or the 18th of January 2015, and again, this is the best opportunity to experience our lovely little land, be a part of it, be in it, see it, do it.
